A Nonprofit HUD-Approved Housing

Education and Counseling Organization

The Sacramento Home Loan Counseling Center (SHLCC), a chartered private

non-profit 501c3 corporation, began offering homeownership education and counseling in July 1991.  The center was formed as a result of discussions between the

Sacramento Housing and Redevelopment Agency (SHRA), local banks, mortgage lenders and real estate professionals on the need for homeownership education and counseling in the greater Sacramento Valley region.  Since its inception, the SHLCC has come to be recognized as one of the industry leaders in homeownership education and

counseling services providing services to more than 50,000 families.

The SHLCC is committed to strengthening California residents through homeownership and is focused on its mission to "promote and encourage homeownership by providing education, counseling and home financing services, with an emphasis on serving low- and moderate-income families".

This is accomplished through the delivery of three comprehensive interactive education workshops to the general public, focusing efforts on low and moderate-income

individuals and first-time purchasers.

  • Course 1 - The Home Buying Process is a 3-hour detailed overview of the primary steps in purchasing and financing a home.

  • Course 2  - Credit and Money Management is a 2-hour workshop focusing on credit and household budget issues.

  • Course 3 - Home Maintenance/Good Neighbor is a 3-hour course that outlines the importance of preventive maintenance and upkeep on a home as well as tips for making the transition from renter to homeowner.

Education Services are coupled with individual counseling opportunities to fully

prepare families for homeownership.  Core to the Center's philosophy is helping

families reach their goal of homeownership and then to be successful after the

transaction is complete.

Collaboration with local housing authorities, area governments, other non-profit

organizations and the lending and real estate community allows the SHLCC to offer

a large number of services with lower administrative costs.

SHLCC has long been recognized as a qualified housing education and counseling

provider.  As a founding member of the American Homeowner Education & Counseling Institute (AHECI), the Center is proud of the fact that many our ideas are

represented in the Core Curriculum and Certification Standards for Homeowner

Education Counseling.  This curriculum provides a basis of content for equalizing and standardizing educational materials available for use in the housing industry

nationwide.  The core curriculum represents the body of knowledge that is essential for understanding the multi-faceted components of achieving and sustaining

homeownership.
